Types of Digital Camcorders
DVD - Popular format works by using DVD-RW and DVD-R discs that work with most ordinary DVD players and allow for actual recording of images to the DVD disk. A great feature of this recording format is the ability to edit in-camera and with repeated playbacks the disk doesn’t degrade. The DVD format provides very high quality images.
MiniDV Digital Camcorders- Very popular and store recorded data to MiniDV cassettes. The video and sound quality is exceptionally good.
HDD Camcorders - Hard Disk Drive camcorders are compact and record in MPEG-2 video as well as other encoded formats and recorded data is stored to an internal hard disk. The upside of this format is the ability to store huge amounts of video data by using compression. The video is saved to the internal hard disc within the camcorder and then downloaded to a computer and burnt onto to a DVD, also, the HDD camcorder has no moving parts and so there is less chance of mechanical breakdown.
Micro MV Camcorders - MicroMV camcorders use tapes that are much smaller than MiniDV tapes and also use more of compression technology and records very high quality video as well as possess the capability of full digital editing.
Flash Media Camcorders - Records images to an internal Flash drive and Flash Memory cards. Flash Memory cards include: SD, Compact Flash, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo
HDV Camcorders - High Definition Video camcorders usually utilize MiniDV tapes or Hard Disk Drives which yield a full 1920x1080 resolution. This resolution provides a superb high-def video picture quality, which looks great on a high definition television. Laptop or desktop required for editing.
Digital 8 Camcorders - This format records digital video to Hi-8 videotapes. Digital8 equipment uses the same videocassettes as analog Hi8 equipment, but differs in that the audio/video signal is encoded digitally. Picture quality is fairly good and this format allows playback of analog videotapes recorded on Hi-8 camcorders.

alturl.com buy the best Digital Camcorders on amazon this video explain how to get the best deal Digital Camcorder.
I want to buy a digital camcorder to take ski videos, videos for school projects, and anything else. I need a camcorder that is not too hard to use, has good editing, and is pretty durable. I want to try ans stay under $400 as well. If anyone could also help explain to me the differences of the different types and capabilities of the digital camcorders, that would be great as well.
Best Answer The BEST camcorders will be those cameras which: 1) store their captured video with the least amount of compression. 2) have an easy video archive process so you don't have an extra step. 3) have an external mic jack so you can connect external mics. 4) have manual audio control, exposure/iris, zoom and focus - but also can go auto while you are learning to use the camera. When you start looking you will find miniDV tape based camcorders will meet all of these requirements. Hard drive, flash memory and DVD based camcorders cannot meet these requirements. DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. Canon ZR950, ZR800 Sony DCR-HC28, HC96 Panasonic PV-GS320
Some digital camcorders boast of 10.2 megapixel resolution for stills. However there is no mention of video resolution. Is video resolution somehow related to the resolution of stills? How do we judge the resolution of video recording with a digital camcorder?
Best Answer Video resolution and still resolution are different. Video resolution is a combination of factors, but for the most part are within two areas - whether the video capture is interlaced or progressive frames per second (fps) and whether it is standard definition or high definition. Within these areas there are different measures of resolution, but they would take pages to describe here. There is more than the links below, but they should at least get you started.
I am looking to buy a digital camcorder, and i was wondering why they are better. What does the digital mean? Also, any good digital camcorders under $250 would be good.
Best Answer They 'write' the video in digital form, which can be copied any number of times without deterioration of the video.
How much better is the video quality of a new digital camcorder compared to the older analog or Hi8 tape camcorders such as the Sony HandyCam. I am particularly curious about the zoom. Many of the newer camcorders have 60X or lower zoom levels, my Sony HandyCam has a 64X zoom and still has reasonably good quality at that level.
Best Answer The intended use of the video will also determine your apparent quality differences. If you have a small CRT television that you play back on and do no further editing, then there may not be much apparent advantage to a new digital camcorder, MiniDv or HD (H.264). If you edit and show your videos to a wider audience, or have a 720i or better TV, especially one of the larger ones, then yes, you will see a huge improvement in quality, even with the inferior HD format (Which is a marketing gimmick that is a step back from MiniDv). One area in which analog MAY be superior, is in poorly lighted scenes. With advanced editing software such as Avid, more detail can be obtained from apparent darkness on analog than on digital. But if you have a $20,000 editing station, your not likely using a HandyCam!
